Application Guideline of Collaborative Research Project for Enhancing Performance of Programming for FY 2024 (2nd Period)

Overview

Academic Center for Computing and Media Studies, Kyoto University (ACCMS) calls for proposals of the Collaborative Research Project for Enhancing Performance of Programming for the fiscal year 2024. This call is designed for the research groups who use our supercomputer system through the Group Course in FY 2024 (including those who are in application process) or the Personal Course users who are planning to switch to the Group Course at the next additional call for the application of the Service Course. Submitted proposals are reviewed by "Supercomputer System Collaborative Research Planning Committee" of the ACCMS. As for the adopted proposals, the adopted users and the faculty members of the ACCMS will conduct the joint research for enhancing performance of programming and the ACCMS will bears the costs for program development, etc.

Eligibility and Requirements

  • Applicants must be the research groups who use our supercomputer system through the Group Course (including the groups in use of Organization Fixed Rate, Joint Usage/Research Center for Interdisciplinary Large-scale Information Infrastructures(JHPCN) or High Performance Computing Infrastructure(HPCI)) in FY 2024 (including those who are in application process), or the Personal Course users who are planning to switch to the Group Course at the next additional calls for the application of the Service Course.
  • The proposals to be submitted must be a (potentially) large-scale parallel computing program that is subject to the performance enhancement as described below. The program copyright must be owned by the project representative, or it must be modifiable without restriction.
    • Performance tuning by improving program control structures and data structures (including optimization for cache)
    • Performance enhancement by improving parallelization methods (including distributed-memory parallelization of shared-memory programs, and hierarchical parallelization of distributed memory or shared memory)
    • Performance enhancement by improving methods of problem reduction or load distribution
  • Academic and technical achievements must be expected by enhancing the performance of the subject program.
  • International students, non-residents, and persons who fall under the specified categories may need to obtain an approval. Please see the following URL for details. If applicable, please consult Research Information Section.

Notes

  • As for the "Preferred Accepted Faculty Member", please make sufficient arrangements for the application and the implementation of the project after adoption with the faculty members you prefer to accept (full-time faculty members excluding appointed faculty members) of the ACCMS in advance. If the "Preferred Accepted Faculty Member" column is left blank, the faculty member will be selected after the application has been adopted.
  • We hold a reviewing on an application of the research project in May 2024. The reviewing may be held more than once.
  • The adoption of a proposal does not guarantee the realization of enhancing the performance of programming.
  • Research and development for enhancing the performance of programming should be conducted based on the collaboration between ACCMS and the project representative (and the persons concerned).
  • When the performance evaluation by executing large-scale parallel program is required on the program, the project representative may be requested to use of the Large-Scale Job Course on their own expenses.
  • In principle, the copyright of the program resulting from the program enhancement under this project, is jointly owned by the original copyright holder and the ACCMS.
  • Project representatives are required to:
    • Submit a User Report of the Collaborative Research Project by the end of April, 2025.
    • Make a presentation at the debriefing session (scheduled in May, 2025).
    • Contribute an article on the project achievements to the Inter-University Services Bulletin (about four pages A4 size) by the end of August 2025 . ※It will be made publicly available on the website of the ACCMS, IIMC, and Kyoto University Research Information Repository (KURENAI).
    • Mention that you used this project when you publish your research results in academic journals or other publications. In addition, you are required to inform the Research Information Section of the list of the journals or the publications after published.
      * Please refer to Acknowledgement for the use of Collaborative Research Project on how to specify in the acknowledgement.
  • The adopted users are obliged to report on the research results of the adopted proposal or cooperate in surveys for three years after the end of the period of use.

Application Procedure

Please fill out the Word file application form and email it to the Research Information Section.

Deadline: Fri. April 19, 2024

*Personal information provided in the application form will be used for the application purposes only. After receiving the form, we will notify the applicants on how to submit the proposals.
