Application Guideline of Collaborative Research Project for Enhancing Performance of Programming (simplified version)

Overview

Academic Center for Computing and Media Studies, Kyoto University (ACCMS) calls for proposals of the Collaborative Research Project for Enhancing Performance of Programming for the purpose of performance evaluation and performance bottleneck analysis of the large-scale computation programs for the fiscal year 2023. This call is designed for the Group Course users (including those who are in application process) or the Personal Course users who are planning to switch to the Group Course at the next additional calls for the application of the Service Course. Submitted proposals are reviewed by Supercomputer System Collaborative Research Planning Committee. As for the adopted proposals, the adopted applicants and the faculty members of the ACCMS will conduct a joint research for the performance evaluation and the performance bottleneck analysis and the ACCMS will bears the cost.

Full-scale tuning and tuning based on the results are scheduled to be conducted in the Collaborative Research Project for Enhancing Performance of Programming (regular version) to be offered in FY 2024.

Eligibility and Requirements

  • Applicants must be the users of the Group Course (including the groups in use of Organization Fixed Rate, Joint Usage/Research Center for Interdisciplinary Large-scale Information Infrastructures(JHPCN) or High Performance Computing Infrastructure(HPCI)) (including those who are in application process) in FY 2023, or the users of the Personal Course who are planning to switch to the Group Course at the next additional calls for the application of the Service Course. System G is not included.
  • The proposals to be submitted must be a (potentially) large-scale parallel computing program that is subject to performance evaluation and analysis as described below. The program copyright must be owned by the project representative or it must be modifiable without restriction.
    • Research of the execution performance dependent on parallel execution parameters (number of execution nodes, number of processes per node, number of threads per process, etc.)
    • Measurement of computing performance, memory access performance, communication performance of the main execution parts of a program, and analysis of program execution characteristics and bottlenecks based on these measurements.
  • Academic and technical achievements must be expected by the evaluation and analysis of the subject program.
  • Non-Japanese citizens such as international students who live in Japan less than six months, Japanese citizens residing in foreign countries and persons who falls under the specific category may need to obtain an approval. Please see the following URL for details. If applicable, please consult Research Information Section.

Notes

  • As for the "Preferred Accepted Faculty Member", please make sufficient arrangements for the application and the implementation of the project after adoption with the faculty members you prefer to accept (full-time faculty members excluding appointed faculty members) of the ACCMS in advance. If the "Preferred Accepted Faculty Member" column is left blank, the faculty member will be selected after the application has been adopted.
  • The adoption of a proposal does not guarantee the realization or degree of speed-up of the target program through performance evaluation and analysis.
  • Performance evaluation and analysis should be conducted in collaboration and cooperation with the project representative (and the persons concerned).
  • When performance evaluation by executing large-scale parallel program is required on the program, the project representative may be requested to use the Large-Scale Job Course on their own expenses.
  • In principle, the results of performance evaluation and analysis of the adopted proposal program will be jointly owned by the original copyright holder and the ACCMS.
  • If your proposal is adopted, you are required to submit files and information necessary for evaluation and analysis, including a set of files necessary for creating an executable such as the source program and Makefile of the proposal program, a set of input files necessary for performance evaluation, and how to create executables and how to execute programs, etc.
  • You are required to mention that you used this project when you publish your research results in academic journals or other publications and to send the list of the journals or the publications to the Research Information Section after publishing the achievements.
※※Please refer to「Acknowledgement for the use of Collaborative Research Project on how to specify in the acknowledgement.

Application Procedure

Please fill out the application form and email it to the Research Information Section.
Deadline: Fri. November 17, 2023

*Personal information provided in the application will be used for application purposes only. After receiving your application, you will be notified of how to submit your proposal program, so please follow the instructions.
