Application Guideline of Collaborative Research Project for Enhancing Performance of Programming for FY 2014 (2nd Half)
Overview
We will accept applications for projects on efficient parallel programming and high performance support for large-scale computing systems. Eligible applicants are limited to research groups that use the supercomputer either through the group course or the private cluster course (including in pending application) in fiscal year 2014. Submitted candidate projects are reviewed by the "Supercomputer System Collaborative Research Planning Committee" of the ACCMS. As for the adopted projects, the ACCMS collaborates in the research to improve the functions and performance of the target programs. The ACCMS bears the costs of program development and other related activities.
Application Eligibility Requirements
- Any research group that uses the supercomputer system either through the group course (including groups that utilizes Kyoto University through "Organization Fixed Rate" or "Joint Usage/Research Center for Interdisciplinary Large-scale Information Infrastructures") or the private cluster course (including in pending application) in fiscal year 2014.
- The target program must have a copyright by a project manager; otherwise, it must be freely changeable. It must also potentially be a large-scale parallel computing program aimed at improving functions and performance such as the following:
-
- Performance tuning by improving the control structure or the data structure of programs (such as optimization with awareness of cache).
- Improvement of functions and performance by improving the parallelization method (such as distributed-memory parallelization of shared-memory programs and hierarchical parallelization of distributed memory or shared memory).
- Improvement of functions and performance by improving the methods of problem reduction or load distribution.
- Demonstration by the target program of achievements in academic and technical areas through improvements of functions and performance.
Research Program Requirements
- A research project manager must do the following:
-
- Submit a research project report on supercomputing (Deadline: the end of April, 2015).
- Announce the research project results at a report meeting open to Kyoto University faculty, staff, and students and to supercomputer users (Anticipated period: April, 2015).
- Contribute an article on research results (about four pages, A4-size paper) to our public relations magazine.
- When publishing or announcing the research results achieved through the adopted project in an academic journal or other publication, acknowledge the use of this program in writing in the report. The project manager must also send information and relevant documents on the report to the Inter/Intra University Services Section.
* On the wording of the acknowledgements, please see "Regarding acknowledgements for use of the Collaborative Research Program".
NOTES
- In September 2014, we hold a public meeting on research projects considered for adoption. The public meeting hearing may be held more than once.
- Adopting a research project does not ensure that the improvement of functions and performance will be achieved in the adopted project.
- Research and development for improvement of functions and performance shall be carried out through the cooperation of a project manager and persons concerned with the project.
- If the completed program requires benchmarks using large-scale parallel programming, we might ask the project manager to use the Large-Scale Job Course. In this case, the project will incur the appropriate fees for the use of this course.
- As a rule, the copyright of complete programs developed by research projects shall be jointly owned by the original copyright holder and the ACCMS.
Application Procedure
Please fill out the Word file application form and email it to the Inter/Intra University Services Section.
Deadline: 17:00, Friday, August 29, 2014
Personal information provided in the application will be used for application purposes only. After accepting application forms, we will tell applicants how to submit the project.
