MATLAB

Designed for StudentFacultyStaff

MATLAB is a sophisticated programming language with an interactive environment that allows algorithm development, data visualization, and mathematical calculation. The program is widely used in various fields, including signal and image processing, communications system design, control system design, experiment measurements, financial engineering, biological engineering, and more. The "toolbox" provides useful pre-built functions that extend your computing environment and help you solve technical problems in your field.

At Kyoto University, we have a comprehensive contract called Campus-Wide License (CWL) with The MathWorks, Inc., enabling all faculty, staff, and students to use their offerings without individual cost.

Features

  • Numerical analysis software that all faculty, staff, and students can use.
  • 100+ optional tools are also available.
  • Can be used outside the campus, offline, or on personally-owned devices.

News

Mar 1, 2023: Added a link to Kyoto-U MATLAB Portal Site.

Mar 3, 2023: Added user guides, a request form for a Designated Computer license, and more info on the sign-in issues affecting some users.

1. Rules & Requirements

  • You need to sign in with your campus account (SPS-ID/ECS-ID) to activate MATLAB. Your MathWorks account must also be linked to your university email address (*@kyoto-u.ac.jp/*@st.kyoto-u.ac.jp).
  • The license is provided to serve non-profit activities at the university, such as education, research, and extracurricular activities. Note that it must not be used for business purposes.
  • If you have already bought a MATLAB license for yourself, see 4. Five Things Existing MATLAB Users Should Know.

2. Access MATLAB Portal Site

Currently, some users are experiencing issues with signing in with their MathWorks account. For more information, please see this notice.

3. How to Use

License Types

There are two types of license available under the CWL agreement:

  • Individual
This per-user licensing is recommended for most cases.
  • Designated Computer
This per-device licensing enables you to use MATLAB on devices that are always running offline.

The start guides below only deal with Individual licensing. If you wish to install and activate MATLAB on an offline device, submit a request through Google Forms to obtain the necessary files and keys. Once you get them, see the following forum and complete the installation and activation: How do I activate MATLAB or other MathWorks products without an internet connection?

Licensing option for shared devices?

If you are using CWL on a shared machine, each user should log in to the operating system with their own account and use MATLAB with their Individual license. If users must use the same user account to log in, Designated Computer licensing is the right option. In this case, don't forget to log out of your MathWorks account before allowing others to use the computer, because they will be able to see your data stored in MathWorks cloud services, such as MATLAB Drive.

Start Guide

Use MATLAB on classroom PCs

You can use MATLAB on physical PCs installed in satellite classrooms and learning commons or on virtual terminals you can connect from your PC. See our PC Terminal Services for more information.

Run MATLAB on our Supercomputing Systems

You can also run MATLAB codes on our Large-scale Supercomputer Systems.

4. Five Things Existing MATLAB Users Should Know

If you already have MATLAB and are using it before we introduce CWL in February 2023, here are five things you should note.

a. You can use the existing license, but the transition is always recommended.

If you already have a MATLAB license before we roll out CWL, you can continue to use it as long as it is valid. However, we recommend you switch to CWL to get access to a broader, more flexible use of the software and its optional products.

If you have a yearly subscription

You can continue to use it until your subscription expires. After that, you can switch to CWL to continue using MATLAB without renewing your own subscription.

If you have a perpetual license

You can continue to use it permanently, but when your maintenance subscription expires, you will lose access to all updates. You can switch to CWL and reinstall MATLAB to regain access to updates provided under the campus agreement.

b. Your MathWorks account must be linked to your university email address.

When using CWL, you must connect your MathWorks account to your university email address (*@kyoto-u.ac.jp or *@st.kyoto-u.ac.jp). If you already created a MathWorks account with another address (such as your department email address), please change it to the university address by editing your profile before you link CWL to your MathWorks account.

Due to the current sign-in issues affecting some users, you cannot change your department email address associated with your MathWorks account at this time.

c. Concurrent licensing will no longer be available.

Concurrent licensing refers to activating MATLAB by connecting to a licensing server over the on-campus network. This activation method will be discontinued because it will no longer be offered by the software company. Since the licensing server that has been used by MATLAB Gumi (a MATLAB user group at Kyoto-U) members will also be shut down at the end of March 2023, users will need to switch to another licensing method, such as Individual in most cases.

d. Transition requires a reinstall.

If you already have MATLAB installed on your computer, you will need to reinstall it to switch to CWL. What you'll need to do during the reinstallation process varies depending on the version you are currently using and the one you are switching to.

If you are using the latest R2022b version

Uninstall the existing MATLAB and reinstall R2022b linked to CWL.

If you are using R2022a or older and switching to R2022b

Uninstall the existing MATLAB (if you no longer need it) and reinstall R2022b linked to CWL.

If you are using R2022a or older and want to keep using the same version

  • As for R2021b or later: Uninstall the existing MATLAB and reinstall the same version linked to CWL.
  • As for R2021a or older: Deactivate MATLAB and activate it again as CWL.

e. Your existing license will not be "stored."

In the 26th issue of our "Info!" PR brochure, we announced that all of your existing (Academic/Classroom Perpetual) licenses that you have already purchased individually will be "in storage" when we roll out CWL. This means that current license assets will be suspended and all licenses in use at the university will be integrated into CWL, allowing license administrators to evaluate how their investment is being utilized within the institution. In this case, if the CWL contract is not renewed in a future year, licenses in storage can be reactivated. However, after discussing campus licensing operations, we have decided not to store existing licenses. The new CWL will be linked to your MathWorks account along with your current license.

5. MATLAB Parallel Server

MATLAB Parallel Server, formerly called MATLAB Distributed Computing Server, is an optional product of MATLAB that enables faster processing and big data calculation on cloud servers or university-owned clusters. One license can handle any cluster regardless of its size. It can be activated by a licensing file provided by our CWL admins. If you are an HPC admin and are considering about deployment of this product, please contact us.

To speed up your processing or scale up your big data calculation, another product called MATLAB Parallel Computing Toolbox is also available under CWL. See Choose a Parallel Computing Solution (MathWorks Help Center) to determine the right tool to your problem.

6. Inquiries

Questions about how to use MATLAB

The CWL campus agreement includes technical support offered by MathWorks. Users are eligible for direct support from the company, so contact MathWorks Support for installation, bug, and other questions. Please note that student support is only available for activation, installation, and bug-related issues. For additional help, contact your instructor.
