Supporting Research Data Management: RDM Drive & Object Storage, Free in FY2025

publication date :

Secure storage, efficient sharing, and proper management of data are essential for research activities.
To meet the needs of researchers at Kyoto University, we have now officially launched our new storage services for researchers, RDM Drive and Object Storage.

The services will be available free of charge for fiscal year 2025. We encourage you to take advantage of this new services to support your research.

RDM Drive: Cloud Storage Powering Collaborative Research

With user-friendly operation, RDM Drive streamlines data sharing among project members.

  • Online storage service provided by Institute for Information Management and Communication
  • Data management for each research project is now possible, improving the efficiency of collaborative research.
  • Up to 5 users can use per 1TB. The system can also be used as the number of users increases.
  • Files can be easily shared with researchers and students outside Kyoto University to promote collaborative research.

Object Storage: Ideal for large data and program integration

  • This service is designed for researchers who require advanced data management and a flexible usage environment.
  • Provides Amazon S3 compatible object storage (please note that expertise is required for its use). Ideal for research requiring large data sets and automated access from programs. Integrates smoothly with existing S3 compatible tools.
  • Access to the tenant administrator page is granted, allowing for a highly customizable environment. Researchers seeking advanced data management will benefit from its flexible configuration and control options.

Which service should I choose?

RDM Drive is recommended for those who:

  • Want to share files with collaborators frequently.
  • Want to manage data easily using a Web browser-based system.

Object Storage is recommended for those who:

  • Want to access data automatically from programs or scripts.
  • Expertise in using Amazon S3 compatible interfaces and APIs and want to use them in a free environment.

Information on Data Handling

The following measures are taken in this service

  • Data is stored on multiple storage nodes in a distributed and redundant manner, and power supply measures are taken with uninterruptible power supplies (UPS) and generators.

However, as backups are not made to remote locations, the complete elimination of data loss risk due to large-scale failures or natural disasters cannot be guaranteed. Therefore, please ensure you back up all important data on your own.

Notes on Use

  • Maintenance: To ensure stable operation, we will perform maintenance once a month, which will involve an hour-long service outage. We appreciate your understanding and cooperation.
  • Data Sharing and Publication: The main purpose of this service is to share files among project members, and the URL for sharing is not permanent. If you intend to make your data widely available to the public, please use the Kyoto University Academic Information Repository “KURENAI”.

For use in FY2026 and beyond (tentative)

RDM Drive and object storage will be available free of charge in FY2025. From FY2026, a contribution will be required based on storage capacity.

Currently, the estimated fee is approximately 6,000 yen per TB per year, but this is subject to change. We will inform you of the details as soon as they are determined. Thank you for your understanding.
