4. BioRender
| Description | "BioRender" is a biological illustration tool provided by BioRender in Canada. It contains a wealth of life science icons and templates, and features functions for creating diagrams and visualization using such assets. A paid contract is required to use diagrams in academic papers published outside the university (free of charge for uses where diagrams are not made public outside the university, such as graduation theses). There are three types of paid contracts: Individual level (per individual), Lab level (per laboratory), and Institution level (per organization). |
|---|---|
| Background and Current Status | Previously, "BioRender" was purchased individually or by laboratory units at Kyoto University. However, as the number of contracts reached the standard for a bulk discount at the Institution level, BioRender proposed an Institution-level contract. Following discussions and adjustments for joint purchase, we have entered into an Institution-level agreement (license purchase) for one year starting from July 2024. For the periods "July 2024 to the end of June 2025" and "July 2025 to the end of June 2026," additional licenses are being sold at the Kyoto University CO-OP on an annual basis (from June to the end of June of the following year) or a monthly basis (from the month of purchase to the end of June) as described below. We are continuing to consider the arrangement for July 2026 and beyond. |
