Beginner's Guide for Students

Kyoto University provides various IT systems and services to support students' learning and research activities.
This section introduces the basic flow of using the university's IT systems and services for new students.

Activate Your Accounts and Set Up Multi-Factor Authentication

For New Students

Email service for student(KUMOI) will be available from April. Please note that until then, logging in will result in an error.

Please prepare the "Account (ECS-ID) Activation Notification" to activate your account and set up multi-factor authentication .

Activation Procedure

Steps 1 to 7 are for activating your account, and step 8 is for setting up multi-factor authentication.

  1. Access "ID Management System".

  2. Enter "ECS-ID" for ID and "Activation Key" for activation key, and click "Login" button.

    "Activation Key" is only used to log in to ID Management System. It is not the password for the ID.
  3. Enter your password.

    The password you set here will be used for various systems and services in the future. Make sure you do not forget it.

  4. Enter the forwarding e-mail address.

  5. Check the "Check box" after confirming the rules of use.

  6. Click the "Execute" button.

  7. "Click the "Logout" button to log out of your account."
    If you see the above message, click the "Logout" button.

    Messages other than the above will result in an error. Please check the message and correct it by clicking on the 'Back' button.
  8. Set up multi-factor authentication.

    Please refer to the "Multi-Factor Authentication Start Manual" for settings.

This completes the activation.
In the future, when you are asked to authenticate using your university-wide account (ECS-ID) for various services applied by Kyoto University, please use the password you set here.

Take Information Security e-Learning

It is required that all Kyoto University Students , Faculty-members and Staff take every fiscal year the lecture called "Information Security e-Learning". Please be sure to take Final Test after learning. Please take absolutely this course within one month after being recruited.

Connecting to the Network

You can connect to the Internet through the KUINS network on campus at Kyoto University. KUINS-Air wireless LAN is available in open areas such as classrooms and meeting rooms, and KUINS-II and KUINS-III wired LAN are available in areas used by specific users such as laboratories and administrative offices.
In addition, a VPN service is available for those who wish to connect to the university network from off-campus via the Internet.

Use of University Mail for Student and Portal Sites

In your student life, you can use the email service for student(KUMOI) to send and receive e-mails, and the student portal to access various information services provided by the university (KUMOI, KULASIS, etc.).

Get Microsoft Office and other software

We negotiate with vendors to make software available to the Kyoto-U community for discounted rates or at no individual cost. This includes the Microsoft Office suite, MATLAB, and some more titles.

Using e-journals and databases

Electronic resources such as e-journals and databases essential for research and educational activities are available. For more information on how to access these resources, please refer to Kyoto University Library Network website.

Use your lifelong email address

For full-time faculty and staff, a lifelong email address is available by registering with KUON, the Kyoto University Alumni Service.
