[Ubuntu] The message 'Firefox is already running ...' appeares and Firefox cannot be started.

When using a virtual terminal (Ubuntu), in rare cases, the following message may appear and prevent Firefox from starting.

This message may appear in several situations, each of which requires a different remedy.

The message in question occurs when Firefox is already running, or when the Firefox is still running on another VDI (Ubuntu) terminal. For Windows VDI, please refer to the above link to resolve the issue. If this symptom occurs on an Ubuntu terminal, please refer to the following procedure.

1) Check to see if Firefox is already running on the VDI currently in use by.
Click the Activities menu in the upper left corner of the Ubuntu desktop, and when the following keyword search screen appears on the desktop, enter "monitor" in the keyword field, and the System Monitor icon will appear as a candidate. Click on it.

When the System Monitor screen comes up, if

  • firefox.exe

is found in the list with the "Processes" tab selected, click on that line and click the "End Process" button twice at the bottom of the screen to delete firefox.exe from the list. After Firefox.exe is removed from the list, please re-launch Firefox.

2) If the "firefox.exe" process could not be found using the above methods, and your symptoms persist after following the above procedures, only when you are currently running Firefox on another VDI terminal that is still running Firefox, or Firefox launched on another VDI (Ubuntu) terminal that was previously reserved for you was not terminated successfully, the remaining remnants of Firefox may be detected.
If Firefox is running on a concurrently reserved self-study terminal or other VDI, it is expected that the symptoms can be avoided by closing the running Firefox or finishing the concurrent VDI schedule normally. But if you have already finished the previous VDI reservation time, you may not be able to close the Firefox used in the previous VDI anymore.

(Instructions for recreating a personal profile in Firefox)
Open a Terminal and try the following command

  • firefox -P

On the screen that appears after executing this command, use the method described in step 4. and subsequent steps in "Start the Profile Manager when Firefox is closed",

  • Creating a profile

If you follow these steps and set Firefox to start with a new profile when it starts up (Use the selected profile without asking at startup), you should be able to use Firefox again.

If you are troubled by repeated occurrence of the aforementioned symptoms, please review whether the symptoms can be suppressed the next time you start using the VDI terminal by making sure to close Firefox when you quit using the terminal (i.e., not leaving the Web screen open).
