Windows PC Initial Setup Guide
Introduction (Important)
⚠️ Important Notes Regarding the “Microsoft Account” Displayed During Initial Setup
At Kyoto University, Microsoft 365 accounts are provided as follows:
・Faculty and staff members with an SPS-ID are assigned accounts in the format “*@ms.c.kyoto-u.ac.jp”.
・Emeritus professors, part-time lecturers, and students are assigned accounts in the format “*@st.kyoto-u.ac.jp”.
For more details, please refer to the following page.
The Microsoft Account required during the initial setup of a Windows PC cannot be this Microsoft 365 account.
Since the university does not configure devices to be managed at the organizational level,
it is also not possible to add this account as a “Work or School account” from the Windows account settings during setup.
Please make sure to carefully review the instructions below before proceeding with the setup.
1. For Windows 11 Pro / Education / Enterprise Editions

click “Sign-in options”. - From the available options, select “Domain join instead”.
- The screen for creating a local account will appear.
Follow the on-screen instructions to create a local account.

you can proceed with the initial setup without using a Microsoft account.
2. For Windows 11 Home Edition
Important Notes
On Windows 11 Home edition,
it is not possible to create a local account during the initial setup.
Therefore, the following restrictions apply:
- You must sign in with a Microsoft account
- The university’s Microsoft 365 account cannot be used
How to Proceed
If you are using Windows 11 Home,
- You will need to create a personal Microsoft account after consulting within your department.
Note:
The Microsoft account you create will be separate from the university’s Microsoft 365 account.
3. Important Notes When Signing In to OneDrive After Initial Setup
Please be sure to review this carefully.
After the initial setup, when signing in to OneDrive,
you may see the following screen:
“Back up your folders to OneDrive”
How to Proceed (Important)
Be sure to select “I’ll do this later”.
Reason
Automatic backup at the initial stage is not recommended
in order to prevent:
- Unexpected storage consumption caused by automatic synchronization of folders
- Mixing of personal data and work-related data
Note: OneDrive provided by the university offers 100 GB per user.
