In the Google Workspace for Education environment, users currently do not have the option to manually delete their Gemini chat history. To address the frequent requests for a way to manage and clear histories under this restriction, we will be shortening the automatic retention period.

This change also serves to align our settings with the student environment.

Details of the Change

• Effective Date (Scheduled): Wednesday, July 1, 2026
• Retention Period: Reduced from 18 months to 3 months
  • Note: This is based on the creation date of each conversation (thread) shown in the sidebar. On July 1, all threads and messages created on or before April 2, 2026, will be automatically deleted.

Recommendations for Continued Use

If you wish to continue using Gemini for specific roles or specialized tasks, we recommend migrating to "Gems" rather than relying on long conversation threads. By configuring instructions (prompts) in a Gem, you can start a conversation with the same settings at any time, regardless of the chat history retention period.

If you have other information you wish to keep, please refer to the backup method below and ensure you export your data before the effective date. Please allow yourself plenty of time, as the backup process may take a while.

How to Backup Your History

You can export your Gemini conversation history using Google Takeout:

1. Go to Google Takeout.
2. Select "My Activity."
3. Choose "Gemini Apps" to begin the export process.
