How to use VM Hosting service (NAS package)

We will explain how to use VM Hosting service (NAS package) here. You are required to apply for this service in order to use this service. . If you would like to apply for the service, please refer to "About the application for the use".

VM server provided in NAS package

Unlike the VM Hosting service in standard package, "FreeNAS 8", which specializes in operating the server as NAS, is installed in the VM server provided in NAS package. This OS enables users to have a server setting from the Web browser same as commercially available Network storage , and never requires the advanced knowledge for UNIX concerning building up the server.

FreeNAS is produced based on FreeBSD, and enables users to operate various services as a standard UNIX server and the command operation from shell screen, however, this service cannot provide enough support for the cases beyond the stage of use as a general NAS. If you think of building up a professional server, please use the standard package installed RHEL6.

You can use the browser in setting VM constructed with FreeNAS. Please activate the PC browser connected to KUINS-III network of VLAN with FreeNAS server, then enter the IP address of VM server in the address bar and log in with the administrator account. The server management screen will be displayed after logging in.

Allocation of storage and the shared setting

Please choose "Disk and file system type" in Volume Manager and click "add the volume", then the partition will be allocated. Please click the "storage" icon at the upper left side of the screen in allocating disk used for sharing files to the sharing space.

After allocating the storage, you should have shared setting to enable to access the allocated artition with Windows, etc. You can make a choice from "Apple sharing(AFP)","UNIX(NFS)","Windows sharing storage (Samba)" for sharing method. In limiting the access on a Network level, you should press "High grade setting". Then you can set "Permit to access" or "Refuse to access" in each Network.

About the user management, creation of directory, and permission setting

You can create user and group in limiting access with user's authentication to enable the specified users to read or write to the sharing disk in NAS.

You can create the group in clicking the "account" icon in the upper-right of the Web interface and clicking "add new group" in the "Group". Also, you can create users in clicing "add new users" in "Users". You can limit the access by access permission in a group unit for the file in a directory and the directory by specifying a group which users belong. User's name and their password are the ones in authenticating from the PC of clients.

Supplemental: The general users can't log in to the Web interface, which is permitted to administrative account.

In clicking "Storage" icon, the list of volume allocated currently are displayed. You can create the system to share the appropriate files in department by creating the directory in the volume, and by providing the permission for each. If you had built the environment in ZFS, the directory will be created in clicking "Create the ZFS data set" from the operating icon displayed at the right side of the volume list. Created directory enables you to limit the access of the file in a group and user unit by clicking the icon of "change the permission."

Mount of the disk

After setting shared directory in FreeNAS, you should connect from the client such as PC to operate NAS. The setting differs depending on the OS of the client, and we will explain the setting for Windows7 and Mac OS X.

- Windows7

From the Start menu, click the "Computer" and choose "Allocation of network drive" in the upper menu. Then choose the alphabet of the drive name to be allocated, and specify the directory path of the disk in NAS. You can search the folder on Network with 「参照(B)」button or enter the path. In clicking 「完了(F)」 at the end, it will be added in the drive list on the computer screen.

Supplemental: In case that the user's name allocated in FreeNAS and the one in Windows are different, please check "Connecct using another credentials(C)" and authenticate when connecting server.

- MAC OS X

In case that the NAS server is displayed on "sharing", at the left side of the screen when activating Finder, please click the icon. If it is not displayed, please click "move" at the upper menu and click "Connect to server" of the displayed sub menu to specify the access point directly. Then you should enter the protocol which enables sharing in NAS server and IP address in the server address box in the "connect to server" screen displayed. For example, if sharing with Windows, you should enter.

smb://IP address

In clicking "Connect", the directory of NAS will be mounted.

If the authentication is not correct, you can change the users in clicking "Connect with another name" at the upper right on the Windows.

Upgrade to the latest version of OS

Upgrade of your FreeNAS to the latest version can be done in the following procedure.
1. Download the upgrade file from Free NAS site and make a note of the hash code. FreeNAS最新版の取得

2.Then login to the management screen of Free NAS and click "Advanced Setting" tab in the "Setting" and click the firmware updating button at the bottom.

3.Since the firmware update screen appears, click "OK" leaving the temporary storage location as it is and then select the downloaded upgrade file, enter the hash code and click "Apply the Update".
