General use

Many varieties of e-Learning courses are provided in Kyoto University such as the e-Learing training service provided by IIMC and training courses on the external system or the original system etc. The attending method depends on each e-Learing course. Please refer to the following instructions to take each e-Learning course.

Please contact ICT support center (support@iimc.kyoto-u.ac.jp) by email including a name of e-Learning course and a URL for login etc. if you can't log in to the system.

【e-Learning courses on the training support service provided by IIMC (Cyber Learning System)】

e-Learning course to take is displayed in the upper tag after login. Please contact ICT support center if one to take is not displayed
because some e-Learning courses require pre-registeration.

【Courses provided for Faculty and Staff (including some graduate students and JSPS research fellows)】

Microsoft Inc provides the free upgrade from Windows7/8.1 to Windows 10 from last July. Microsft Inc fixes that the deadline for the free upgrade is by July.29 and IIMC gets lots of inquiries concerning upgrading PC used on business.

Upgrade to Windows10 has merits of enhancing the safety by security institute in addition to enable users to use the latest functions of Windows. On the other hand, it has troubles by upgrading depending on the PC. Therefore we need to consider on the viewpoint of continuous businness and study.

IIMC announced "Please refrain from upgrading to Windows10" in the news as of July.23,2015,(※1)however, we confirmed that there is no outstanding troubles for the all-university service provided by IIMC in the later inspection.(※2)。There might be the above mentioned troubles by upgrading or the troubles of system per business. Please check the reference information and judge in accordance with the principle of each organization.

We will provide the reference information about uprading to Windows10 as follows.

Outline of the reference information

  • The outstanding troubles about the movement of all-university service provided by IIMC are not reported at the moment. Also Windows 10 has more advanced security function compared to that of Windows7/8.1.
  • There is an example of having troubles in upgrading. We strongly recommend that users should backup the data and prepare for the substitute PC in upgrading the currently used PC. Getting a new PC is also the good choice if users have old PCs.
  • The unexpected upgrade to Windows10 can be cancelled. Also, you can downgrade to the previous OS after upgrading, however, several settings might be reset.

Reference Information

The outstanding troubles about the movement of all-university service provided by IIMC are not reported at the moment.However, the previous browser is not compatible with the "Edge", the latest standard Web browser of Windows. Please use "Internet Explorer" continuouslt to access to Portal or Faculty and Staff mail etc.(※2)

Also, compared to the Windows7/8.1, Windows10 has more advanced security function.(※3)。This has effects to ease the target attacks which threatens nowadays.(※4)。

For the actual procedure for upgrading, please refer to article issued by Faculty of Engineering affilicated information center because the article has an explanation with screen shot and has recommended setting explanation.(※5)。

However, there might be the troubles depending on the PC in upgrading. We check the troubles such as the terminals won't be reactivated or the OS will be down due to the error frequently on-campus.

In case there's a trouble in PC after upgradingm users can downgrade to the previous Windows7/8.1. However we are scared that some settings of deveice such as printer or of software such as Microsoft will be lost in its process. For downloading or Cancelling, please refer to the publich information from Microsoft Inc(※6) or the guide from Consumer Affairs Agancy(※7).

We strongly recommend to backup the data or prepare for the susbstitute PC because of the issues above or because it taks long to upgrade. Also the older PC becomes, the worse the condition of the hardware driver, and it causes the problems. Please consider to purchase the latest PC rather than to upgrade the PC because the general cost is low in purchasing the latest PC and upgrading the PC is risky. FOr the condition of hardware friver of your OC, please check the information released by maker.

Cache is the mechanism to store the data of the website accessed once temporarily and make the display quickly in accessing again to the same page.

In keeping the cache in browser, the new contents won't be displayed because the one kept in browser will be displayed as priority even though the website was updated.
If there was no change after updating the website, please delete the cache in the following way.

※There might be the case that the way to delete the cashe differs depending on the version of the browser. We will explain the main example as follows.For the details, please confirm the source of the browser you use.

●Windows, Internet Explorer(ver 9)
  • Please click the gear-shaped icon(tool) at the upper right of Internet Explorer and choose "Internet option(O)" from the choice.
  • "Internet option" windows will be displayed.
  • Please click "delete(D)" from the "Browsing history" in the "General" tab.
  • Please uncheck the check box of "Save the website data for Favorite" (on top) and check everything in the other check boxes of "Deletion of the browsing history" and click "Delete(D)" at the bottom.(Please be noted that the password will be deleted as well in checking "password(P)".)
  • Please wait until the message appears at the bottom of the display saying "The deletion of the browsing history you chose was completed".
  • Please click "OK" and close the "Internet option" window.
  • Please terminate the Internet Explorer and restart it.

●Windows, Firefox(ver 34.x)
  • Please choose "Option(O)" in "Tool(T)" of Menu bar.
  • Please click "Delete on the spot(C)" at the right of "The amount of the disk cache in the present Web page is **bytes" of "Off-line data and user's data" in "Network" tab of "Detail".
  • Please click "OK" at the bottom of the option window and close it.
  • Please terminate the Firefox and restart it.

●Windows7, Google Chrome
  • Please choose "setting(S)" after clicking "Setting Google Chrome" in the tool bar of the browser.
  • Please click "Display the detail setting・・・" at the bottom of the setting display and find "Privacy" from the display. Then please click "Delete the browsing history data".
  • Another window will start up and you can clear the cache in choosing items here.(Please be noted that the password will be deleted as well in checking "password(P)".)
●Macintosh (OS X 10.10.1), safari(ver 8.0.2)
  • Please choose "Delete the history and Website data/Empty the cache" from the "safari" menu.
  • The window will be displayed saying "The record, Cookie, and another Web site data will be deleted" and please click "Delete the history".
  • Please terminate the Safari and restart it.

or

  • Please choose "Environment setting" from the "safari" menu.
  • Please click "Privacy" icon and the window of "Privacy setting" will be displayed.
  • Please click "All Web site data will be deleted" and the cache will be cleared.
  • Please terminate the Safari and restart it.

※(Please don't click a red button at the upper right. Please choose 【Safari】>【Terminate Safari】 from the menu on top.)

●Macintosh (OS X 10.10.1), Firefox(ver 34.0.5)
  • Please choose "Environment setting" in "Firefox" menu.
  • The "Environment setting" window will be displayed and please click "Details" to choose "Network" tab.
  • Please click "Delete on the spot" at the right of "Off-line data/The amount of the present disk cache is **MB"⇒In completing deletion, the message "the amount of the disk cache is 0MB" will be displayed.
  • Please close the option window.
  • Please terminate the Firefox and restart it.

●Macintosh (OS X 10.7.2), Google Chrome(ver 39.0.2.71.95)
  • Please choose "Delete the browsing history" in "Chrome" menu.
  • Please check "Cookie and the data of plug-in and the other website", "Cached images and files", "Deletion of the browsing history" in the "Delete the browsing history data" and click "Delete the history data".
  • Please terminate the Chrome and restart it.

●Macintosh, Internet Explorer(ver 5.x)
  • Please choose "Environment setting" in the "Explorer" menu.
  • Please choose "Detail setting" in the "Web browser" at the left column to click "Empty the cache".
  • Please terminate the Internet Explorer and restart it.

Please follow the procedure depending on the user's ID category as follows.

【ECS-ID(Account for students)ID,Password】

We will set the new password validation key. Please come to the ICT support center(Academic center for Computing and Media Studies, South Buiding 1F) with your ID aftr filling in the "Application form (Forget password・ECS-ID)"
"Application form (Forget password・ECS-ID)"

【SPS-ID(Account for Faculty and Staff)ID,Password】

We will reissue the notification of your password and ID. Please inquire ICT support center(EXT:16-5323).

In having error on display in Webpage such as

◆Showing up as a strange characters

◆The images won't be displayed

◆Failing to log on

◆The update won't be reflected

, there might be the case that the browser read the old temporaly files(cache) and display.

Please detete the temporary files (cache) in the following procedures.

【To delete the temporary file(cache) in the browser】
■Internet Explorer 8

Starting up Internet Explorer and choose "tool"→" Internet option" in the tool bar.

Please choose the general tab and click "delete" button in the " history of past searches".

Please check "temporary file in the Internet" and click "delete".

In completting deletion, please click "OK" button and restart the browser.

■Internet Explorer 7

Starting up Internet Explorer and choose "tool"→" Internet option" in the tool bar.

Please choose the general tab and click "delete" button in the " history of past searches".

Please click "deleting files" in the "temporaru file in the Internet"→"Yes".

In completing deletion, please click "Close"→"OK"、then restart the browser.

■Firefox10

Starting up the Firefox and choose "tool" →"Delete the latest search" in the tool bar.

Please click "V" button in case the "item to delete" is not displayed in the lower of the "delete all the search" windows.

Please confirm that "cache" is checked and click "delete now".

In completing deletion, please restart the browser.

■Safari 2.x

Starting up Safari and choose "empty the cache" from the "Safari" menu.

Please click "empty" button.

In completing deletion, please restart the browser.
